Most "how-to studies" of the Bible do a kind of rote, start here, notice this, take note of that, apply this here, and so on. As a pastor, Cordeiro has understood that there are many times in life when you will struggle with a variety of issues. Most of us men want to immediately find an answer: give me something concrete that I can grasp so that I can fix it and move on; no matter what "it" is. The problem is, that's not how life works most of the time.
Individual Bible study is often deemed "difficult" We want to get on with our day. We don't make the time to spend with God. We may know that we should spend the time, but for a variety of reasons, we just don't. Those who do make the time, prosper in their lives. This isn't to say that their lives go well 100% of the time, but these people are firm and fixed in their faith. They know that God is ultimately in control of every aspect of their life.
These folks have also come to understand that as you read and re-read Scripture, you are always being taught. You're always being mentored not only by the Holy Spirit but also by the characters and writers within the pages of the Bible itself. The Holy Spirit is there to illuminate and guide your reading and study.
This study using "The Divine Mentor" as a guide helps to answer the questions of "Why?" as well as "How?" to study the Bible. Changing our attitude toward Bible reading and study makes all the difference.
Let's take a walk together over the next 10 weeks with Wayne Cordeiro and our Bibles and be mentored by God Himself (and bring along a pen and paper - download the study notes - too). In time, we will also be able to mentor better those who come behind us.
All Scripture quotes are from the New International Version, 1984.
Before we really get started in Wayne Cordeiro's book "The Divine Mentor," I have a few thoughts.
The longer I teach, the more I realize how great a responsibility this is. There is a responsibility to class members in front of me, and, there is the responsibility to not only honor God but to get to know Him better. Continue here...
How do we start an individual Bible study? More importantly, WHY do we need to individually read and study God's Word? Isn't church and Sunday school enough? Let's find out why.
Life gives us a choice: walk the minefield without knowing anything about it or following someone who's already walked through. Life provides us with 4 great teachers: Wisdom and Consequences, Discipline and Regret. We can then either live a Life or leave a Legacy.
As a father and grandfather, I know that babies need to be fed. Thankfully, children grow up and are able to feed themselves, growing to adulthood where we can prepare our own meals. Why is the Christian life in general and Bible reading and study in particular so different? People "church shop" because they're not being "fed". Grow up!
Life is sometimes hard and dusty. We need to be renewed and refreshed or we will suffer. God's Word and all of the Mentors He has provided is that source of renewal and refreshment for our minds, hearts, spirits and daily life. Daily reading and study help, us to "press the Reset Button" of our lives.
"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12. The Bible is an "unsafe" book to many. How will you use and be used by this tool that God has provided?
What are the 5 things we need to have when we study God's Word? Hint: you probably already have 4 of them!
